Several months ago, our Scouts - following the lead of Troop 138G - asked for the opportunity to purchase merchandise that they could wear to show their affiliation and support with Troop 138.
The process to do that was a bit more time and labor intensive than originaly thought. It was not easy to just grab a BSA logo and place it on a shirt and print it. There were all sorts of rules and costs associated with that approach. Instead, we opted for a process that involved us designing our own logo from scratch to save on the significant costs to the Troop. But it was more than one logo we needed to design. Again, in following the lead of Troop 138G, our boys voted on their favorite logo from an assortment of others that they could proudly display.
Once we had the logo, it was time to meet with some printers to get the best price and quality material. We found that in Gem printing in Fair Lawn, which does a significant amount of apparel printing for area schools, police, and fire departments.
What was great about Gem, was not only the pricing and the quality, but the ability for us - the Troop - to reap a small fundraising benefit. Today, after being open just about two weeks, we have sold to our own Troop members over 70 apparel pieces. So many families went beyond the black Class C t-shirt that the boys all voted on, and purchased an assortment of clothing. Through these efforts - all aimed at our boys being able to proudly don their affiliation to Troop 138 - we have raised $334! That money will be be put towards refurbishing, registering, and renovating our Troop trailer, which is in dire need of TLC.
Wow! How far we have come with just a simple idea from out boys that they wanted their own merch store! To think that idea will translate into a an awesome refurbished troop trailer. Mr. Anglani will be having a field day shepherding that project through.
So with all that said, we still have 1 day left for the store to be open. They're a few scouts and ASM's that have not visited the store to at least purchase their Black Class C t-shirt, so if you are one of those folks please make sure you do that so we can carry out the Troop's goal of a new Class C shirt!
