Scoutmaster Minute: Balance - Scott Roberts

From tonight's Scout Master minute

What do you think would happen to you if all you did all of the time was eat, sleep & play games? What would happen if you never endured pressure, or took on responsibility?

I can tell you.

After you have basked in that stress-free, lazy & leisurely existence for a while, you would start to wonder, IS THERE NOT SOMETHING MORE?

More to life? More to do? More to offer the world? … Is there not More To You???

The fact is, you cannot appreciate that something is fun or pleasant if you don’t also know some degree of stress & hardship.

If you do not earn a reward, then there is no such thing as a reward. The “reward” would have no meaning.

Life is balance!

· There is no such thing as fun without work.

· You can’t appreciate a sunny day without knowing rainy days.

· You can’t appreciate day without night, or night without day.

· You won’t be able to bask in the delightful feelings of accomplishment & achievement if you do not put in the work and effort needed to accomplish & achieve!

· AND the magnitude of elation you feel from accomplishing something is directly proportional to the amount of effort it took to accomplish that something.

· Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said it in an extreme but true way: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger” In other words, tough experiences make people stronger & better able to handle tougher things in the future.

So: do not run from work, or challenges. Embrace them. Confront them. Put in the effort.

You will appreciate the reward all the more if you do.

AND THAT, is the Scoutmaster Minute.
